Robert Stone's novel Damascus Gate was the first place I heard about the "Jerusalem Syndrome", but then a lot of his books explore the kinds of peculiar psychoses specific to any insular time and place: Vietnam and drug running in Dog Soldiers, long distance solo sailing in Outerbridge Reach, Central American anti-Communism in A Flag for Sunrise and so on. If even two people can fall into a folie a deux, Jerusalem must inspire exponential growth.
